Art Inspired by Satyajit Ray

We have been reading short stories from "The Exploits of Professor Shonku" by the well known Bengali writer, Satyajit Ray. The stories are full of fascinating imagery, and we becme inspired by the image of a Sadhu hanging upside-down yelling mantras and bringing dead animals back to life by casting spells on their bones.

We worked in pairs to create our initial pencil drawing on A3 paper. Then, we photocopied the original twice so that we had a copy each. The task was to add our own personal touches to the collaborative drawing by adding more details and by using colour in an individual way. The results are fantastic. Here's some pictures of us working on them:

Lines Change Shapes

At the moment, we're investigating using lines to create designs. In this activity, we tore up pieces of newspaper and stuck them to a piece of white A4 paper. Then we used black markers to make lines that create new shapes and designs.

Mahabubul is the new Mark Rothko?

Mahabubul has been doing some oil pastel pictures at home that reminded me of one of my favourite artists, Mark Rothko.

What do you think of these paintings?
Maybe you could try to do something similar too?

Our own interpretation

We were allowed to study the painting for 5 minutes, and then Mr.Sherratt hid it!!! We were given some nice-quality local paper, a soft pencil (2B) and a choice of what to do the colours with. We had to try and remember the painting as wellas we could, but it didn't matter if it wasn't just like the original.

Above are a few of the best examples our work.

"I chose these pictures for several different reasons. Two of them are very detailed drawings, with a lot of care taken over the colouring - they chose to use coloured pencils. These two students have a very good sense of proportion, shape and composition. I chose the other two because of the bright, vivid and exciting colours. These two students chose oil pastels, and obviously really enjoyed creating bright and attractive images." Mr. Sherratt

Remembering the Painting

Next we did two things: First, we looked at the painting for one minute and then, when it was hidden, we listed all the things that are in it. Then, we looked at the painting for five minutes and then, when it was hidden, sketched it in our own style.

Inspiration

We are being inspired by this painting, called "Brown Madonna", by the Philippino artist Galo B. Ocampo.

First we thought of words to describe the mood and the atmosphere. Here they are:

"Lost" - Rikitta "Restless" - Lubana "Bright" - Zahra "Sunny" - Henrica "Peaceful" - Zaima "Warm" - Verkha "Poor" - Rhythma "Lonely" - Farhana "Colourful" - Rushmila "Normal" - Afif "Shocked" - Farzad "Unhappy" - Farshed "Hopeless" - Moin "Ancient" - Sohel " Miserable" - Yaman
